Subject:Updated Evel Knievel estimate
Hi Wendy and Chance,
See attached updated Cost Estimate for Evel Knievel along with the 90% drawings and specs.
The new estimate is $940,000.
Normally, I would expect estimates to go down as design progresses. For initial budgeting, you typically start out with a
rough cost plus a huge contingency. Then, as you dial it in, estimates typically drop as you eliminate the unknowns. In
this case, I believe item costs went up and they discovered unknowns they didn’t initially anticipate.
I think we could drop the estimate by $87k if we narrow the road from 30 ft to 22 ft. That would eliminate the
dedicated bike/ped lanes though and I’m not sure if Mitch would for it.
We could also trim down the parking lot itself. I figure that based on their estimate that cost would be reduced by
roughly $5,000 for every 1,000 square feet. I’m not sure how far to go though since I think we would still want some RV
parking and maneuvering room.
The budget for this design work came from FY21, so it was encumbered for FY22, which has now ended. Since finance
won’t let us encumber for more than one year, I believe our remaining funding expired. However, the remaining work
left was to finalize the drawings and specs, bid, and construct, so all of that can be picked up if/when we get funding for
the project. (The cost for that engineering was also added to the estimate, so that’s a piece of the higher number.)
I think we are paused until the project is funded.
Please let me know if you would like to meet and discuss this more.
