See if those things speak to the coverage or hours. Apart from that, I guess I did expect that the idea behind hiring Gessie was that we’d be able to have coverage at more times of the days/days of the week than we were getting with just John. It doesn’t sound like that is happening. I wouldn’t put them on a 9/80 schedule. If John is so hung up on not working weekends, then make him a mon-fri guy and have Gessie work sat-sun and three other days during the week. Are they open Sundays? We can revisit the non-exempt thing any time. If he does go non-exempt, then we would still have an expectation that he have a 40 hour schedule to keep overtime to a minimum. I agree that a head life guard acting as facility manager should be an exception, not a standard every Saturday/Sunday. The fact is that the pool operates differently than the rest of the recreation team, so he can’t expect to have the same schedule as Stacy. We can talk more about this when we have a chance, but those are my initial thoughts. From: Wendy Davis <wdavis@tfid.org> Sent: Tuesday, January 24, 2023 2:08 PM To: Mitch Humble <Mhumble@tfid.org> Subject: John Pauley Mitch, John put in a request for him and Gessie to move to a 9/80 schedule. When I thought about it some more, I started to question what that would look like for a 7 day/week operation, and how that could impact Gessie as an hourly employee, so I reached out to Ida. She suggested I play with their hours a bit to see how it could work. If the goal is to have a 3 day weekend, or every other Friday off, maybe it is just a scheduling issue, not a timeclock plus shift. I pulled their hours and realized that neither one of them are working weekends, and that they are both working days Monday – Friday. John’s schedule is more 8-11:30 ish and 1:30 – 7, and Gessie is 10:45 – 7:15. I called and told John I was looking into the 9/80 and trying to determine if that shift was necessary, and asked him who was covering the weekends, and why he and Gessie are working daytime during the week together. He got SUPER defensive and told me that he needed her to help him during the day, and that a head guard is covering the management of the facility on the weekends. Then, the conversation deteriorated and I realized he is more upset about hours, expectations for coverage and the fact that he is exempt. And, he thinks it is unfair that there is an expectation that he might have to work weekends when Parks and Recreation don’t. Ugh. I have a few questions for you: 1 1-when we hired Gessie, was it your understanding that they would split their time in order to have one of them onsite most of the time the pool is open? Or am I crazy? 2-Am I wrong to think it is inappropriate to have a head guard functioning as a manager/supervisor every weekend? (rather than once in a while) I tried to tell him that I was just trying to figure out what problem we are trying to solve, and make sure that the shift to 9/80 is the right one. As we talked, I told him I thought his frustration might be stemming from something else, and that maybe it is time to revisit the exempt/non-exempt discussion. He feels that if there is an expectation that he cover weekends, that he should be paid overtime for that. I tried to explain that I wasn’t changing my expectations, but that I had always thought he or Gessie would be onsite when the facility is open, within reason (early morning lap swim might be an exception) and I wasn’t aware that they had opted not to do that. Before I move forward on this, I think I need to address the weekend expectations before we try to navigate a time clock shift, shift to non-exempt status, and/or simply a scheduling shift that gives each of them more time off if that is what they are striving for. (4-10’s perhaps?) I would appreciate your thoughts on this. You can call if that is easier.
