General Statement of Duties
Performs fire fighting and other emergency response services for the Fire Department; performs
related work as required.
Classification Summary
The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Engine Company Officer or Battalion
Chief. Limited leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. An
employee in this classification may perform as a Tender Operator or Relief Driver. The principal
duties of this class are performed in a work environment in which the employee is subject to
potential personal danger.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls and applies appropriate strategies and
tactics as dictated by the Engine company officer;
When assigned, may perform equipment set-up upon arrival at a fire scene;
Studies training materials as assigned to stay current on new technologies and processes in
fire fighting, rescue, hazardous materials, fire prevention and related activities; including
familiarization of streets and other geographical information within our area of jurisdiction;
Assists with fire code inspections of buildings and related facilities, pre-emergency plans of
the same and to become familiar with layouts and structural features. Performs various
service and repair duties as assigned;
Performs daily building and ground maintenance to ensure that Fire Department facilities are
clean and orderly;
Assists with the promotion of fire prevention and safety information to the general public;
Performs hydrant inspection and flow testing as assigned;
Advises supervisor of progress on all assigned duties;
Identifies and suggests new or improved ways to perform departmental duties;
Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships within the department, with other
city employees, agencies and the public.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
May assist with training as assigned;
May serve as Tender Operator;
May serve as Relief Driver Operator;
Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Various fire fighting strategies for all types of fire such as wildland, commercial, residential,
airport, flammable and combustible liquids, vehicle, etc.;
Familiarization of airport complex, Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting, and various types of
aircraft;
Maintain First Responder and all other required certifications;
Basic mathematical and science skills;
Fire code for inspection purposes;
Current fire suppression and rescue techniques, including all related equipment;
Fire records systems, communications equipment, and computer applications;
All safety practices.
Ability to:
Work as a team member under extremely stressful situations, day and night environment
which result from a fire and other emergencies, including remaining calm and carrying out
all duties with the recognition of the threat to life and property;
Work within a command structure requiring strict adherence to the following of orders;
Learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by changing information
and/or technology in the fire service;
Maintain effective working relationships with department personnel, city employees, and the
general public;
Perform strenuous physical labor;
Learn and correctly apply department policies and procedures;
Read, comprehend, and follow simple oral and written instructions;
Provide quality services in a cost-effective manner and to recommend improved methods of
performing the work;
Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the
pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
Acceptable Experience and Training
High school diploma or equivalent general educational development (GED) certification;
Must be at least 18 years of age;

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and
abilities necessary to perform the work
IFSAC Firefighter – EMT Basic – Semester level 11 credit course (CSI)
Special Qualifications
Twin Falls Fire Department Level I certification attained within the first year of employment;
First Responder certification;
Hazardous Materials awareness certification within one year of employment;
Valid State of Idaho Driver’s License.
Essential Physical Abilities
Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing and other communication capabilities, with or
without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively,
including during emergency situations which may involve a high degree of noise;
Sufficient vision and other powers of observation, with or without reasonable
accommodation, which permits the employee to effectively operate at a fire or related
emergency scene;
Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the
employee to operate equipment used in fire fighting;
Sufficient personal mobility, physical reflexes and strength, with or without reasonable
accommodation, which permits the employee to perform all duties involved in protecting life
and property.
