HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Driver-Operator City of Twin Falls Class Specification Driver/Operator Class Code Number: 423-07 Pay Grade: FLSA Designation: Non-exempt Effective Date: June 1, 2011 Department: Fire Revision Date: July 23, 2021 Supervisor: Captain General Statement of Duties Drives and operates fire vehicles, and performs fire fighting and other emergency response services for the Fire Department; performs related work as required. Classification Summary This position functions as a member of an engine company under direct supervision of the Engine Company Officer or Battalion Chief. Limited leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. An employee in this classification may serve as Relief Captain as needed and performs the duties of other employees in the Twin Falls Fire Department when so assigned. The principal duties of this class are performed in a work environment in which the employee is subject to potential personal danger. Examples of Work (Illustrative Only) Essential Duties and Responsibilities  Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls and applies appropriate strategies and tactics as dictated by the Engine Company officer;  Be familiar with the streets within the Fire Departments area of jurisdiction., Performs rescue, firefighting, and salvage operations as directed;  Assists with fire code inspections of buildings and related facilities, pre-emergency plans of the same, and becomes familiar with the building’s layout and structural features.  Maintains an awareness on scene for the purpose of protecting the lives and safety of the general public and all first responders;  On scene – working independently scene, vehicle, equipment, supplies  Studies training materials to stay current on new technologies and processes in fire fighting, rescue, hazardous materials, fire prevention and related activities.  Performs daily apparatus inspection, cleaning and maintenance (response ready) to ensure that all equipment is in clean and in good working order, noting serious Driver/Operator Page 2 maintenance problems are identified and referred for service;  Performs daily building and ground maintenance to ensure that Fire Department facilities are clean and orderly;  Assists in the promotion of fire prevention and safety information to the general public;  Performs hydrant inspection and flow testing as assigned;  Advises supervisor of progress on all assigned duties;  Identifies and suggests new or improved ways to perform Fire Department duties:  Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;  Establishes and maintains effective working relationships within the Fire Department with City employees, agencies, and the public. Other Duties and Responsibilities  May serve as Relief Captain;  May assist with training as required;  Performs related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of:  Area of jurisdiction;  City traffic laws and safe driving practices;  Truck specifications, operations and maintenance;  Various fire fighting strategies for all types of fire such as wildland, commercial, residential, airport, flammable and combustible liquids, vehicle, etc.;  Maintain EMT Basic and all other required certifications;  Basic mathematical and science skills;  Fire codes for inspection purposes;  Fire records systems, communications equipment and computer applications;  All safety practices involved in fire suppression and rescue;  Familiarization of airport complex, Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting, and various types of aircrafts;  Effective teaching and communication techniques; Ability to:  Drive and operate heavy apparatus;  Work as a team member under extremely stressful situations, day and night, which result from a fire and other emergencies, including the ability to remain calm and carrying out all duties with the recognition of the threat to life and property;  Work within a command structure requiring strict adherence to the following of orders;  Prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations, as assigned;  Operate TFFD apparatus and equipment; Perform service testing on all fire related apparatus;  Learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by changing Driver/Operator Page 3 information and/or technology;  Establish and maintain effective working relationships with department personnel, city employees, and the general public;  Perform strenuous physical labor;  Learn and correctly apply department policies and procedures;  Read, comprehend, and follow oral and written instructions;  Provide quality services in a cost-effective manner and to recommend improved methods of performing the work;  Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;  Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks; Acceptable Experience and Training  High school diploma or equivalent general educational development (GED) certification with course work in general office skills;  Three (3) consecutive years with the Twin Falls Fire Department;  Current certification/training requirements;  Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work. Special Qualifications  Completion of Driver’s Academy;  Twin Falls Fire Department Level II Firefighter Certification;  EMT Basic certification;  Valid State of Idaho Driver’s License. Essential Physical Abilities  Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing and other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively, including during emergency situations which may involve a high degree of noise;  Sufficient vision and other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to effectively drive fire department apparatus and operate at a fire or related emergency scene;  Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate equipment used in fire fighting;  Sufficient personal mobility, physical reflexes and strength, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to perform all duties involved in protecting life and property.
