On July 15,2024,at approximately 9:00a.m.,we received a report thatthe Rock Creek Lift Station was overflowing
into the adjacent pasture.Upon arrival, our maintenance staff found that the lift station grinder motorwas running,
but the grinder blades were not turning. This caused the influent channel to back up into the west line, resulting in
sewage spilling onto the ground. To address the issue, the maintenance team diverted the flow around the grinder to
the manual rake bar screen, effectively reducing the flow level in the channel.By 10:30 a.m.,they had successfully
halted the spill.
Further investigation revealed that the gearbox motor coupler had slid up on the shaft and separated from the
grinder coupler. To prevent this from happening again, the couplers were removed, taken to a machine shop, and
equipped with set screws.
Additionally,we discovered that the high-level alarm system had not been triggered.Upon inspection,it was found
that the float wires going to the PLC were not properly connected. An electrician rectified this by installing the wires
and testing the floats to ensure they would alarm as designed.
The IPDES report line on July 16 at 7:22 a.m.,repotting an estimated spill of 5 to 10 thousand gallons into Rock
Creek. Samples were collected from Rock Creek and sent to the lab to be analyzed.
